3 Drinks At TPC Part II -
What About Love?

Beer Naked Truths is back for a Valentine’s Day Special: 3 drinks, 6 singles...and a boatload of awkward questions about dating!

Let’s face it: Valentine’s Day can be pretty cliché in terms of celebration methods. I mean: Overpriced flowers? Candlelit restaurant? Rom-com movies? Meh.

Doesn’t free booze, amazing Mexican food and a blind date with a mysterious stranger sound like a way more interesting way to spend Valentine’s Day?

As part of our ongoing experiment into the effect that booze has on one’s honesty, we transformed Tanjong Pagar Centre’s Chill Out Corner into a suitably romantic studio set.

Then we partnered with Lunch Actually to pair up 6 sporting singles, ply them with free beer and Mexican food (courtesy of Guzman Y Gomez!), and ask them increasingly awkward questions as they got more inebriated through the evening.

We present their responses below for your reading pleasure. Oh, and to all couples and singles out there: Happy Valentine’s Day!

BLIND DATE 1

Choon Fah & Jalaine

Dead sober:

“What are the top 3 ideal traits you look for in a partner?”

Jalaine:

Intellectual, self-confident, and gentlemanly. That’s very important! I can’t stand that Singaporean guys aren’t gentlemanly enough. Like, letting girls stand by the side of the pavement [closer to the road], with the cars.

Choon Fah:

That’s like how easy to do!

Jalaine:

But you wouldn’t do it naturally, right?

Choon Fah:

-Pause- True…You don’t actually think about it.

Jalaine:

How about you?

Choon Fah:

My top 3 traits? Sincerity is very important. Chemistry, which is a bit more abstract, and it really differs from person. And independence of opinion: I admire someone who knows what she wants.

Halfway Happy:

“What’s the sexiest/most romantic thing anyone’s done for you?”

Jalaine:

When a guy took the initiative to help me carry heavy stuff when I didn’t ask him though. –Laughs- it’s really sweet. I really appreciate that, and it’s sexy in my eyes.

Choon Fah:

Sexiest thing… Women taking the initiative and making the first move. When they don’t always expect the guy to initiate the conversation first. I mean, guys can get shy as well!

Beer Naked:

“Rate your drinking partner on a scale of 1-10. What’s their best trait?”

Jalaine:

7? You have your own mind and you’re intellectual.

Choon Fah:

Maybe a 6. I think you’d be a great friend to hang out with.

BLIND DATE 2

Keav & Jing Ling

Dead sober:

“What are the top 3 ideal traits you look for in a partner?”

Jing Lin:

Having the same interests as me, adventurous, likes to travel, and can accept my personality. I think that’s the most important one!

Keav:

Do you have a queer personality?

Jing Lin:

I don’t have a queer personality… I have multiple personalities! Sometimes I’m very quiet, and sometimes I’m a little crazier.

Keav:

What do I look for in a partner? Kindness, able to look after the family and last but not least, has to be sporty. She has to keep up with me.

Halfway Happy:

“What’s the sexiest/most romantic thing anyone’s done for you?”

Keav:

I’m not sure if I can say this on camera! Cleaning me up when I was dead drunk and absolutely knocked out. My partner had to clean me up, change me and put me to bed. That was the most romantic thing, because most people would walk away if you got yourself into that situation and leave you in your own puke.

Jing Lin:

-Laughs- So I bet you proposed to her the next day when you sobered up?

Keav:

No I didn’t. She was pretty pissed off with me. How about you?

Jing Lin:

I used to work in a late shift, so I’d finish work at around 2 in the morning. The most romantic thing that someone’s done for me is to be there for me: Cook a dish of pasta, set up the tables, listen to me rant about work. And then give me a nice massage before we went to bed.

Beer Naked:

“Rate your drinking partner on a scale of 1-10. What’s their best trait?”

Keav:

I don’t think you can rate anyone on a scale of 1-10! I’d give you a 10 for showing up, trying, and daring to be on camera. There’s no reason why I wouldn’t ask you out on a date.

Jing Lin:

10/10. You’re a good drinker and if I have any drinking or social events I’d definitely ask you out to help me!

BLIND DATE 3

Kai & Ariane

Dead sober:

“What are the top 3 ideal traits you look for in a partner?”

Kai:

Being courteous: I hate it when people are rude to wait staff. Patience? I’m not a very good boyfriend. I make girls wait too much.

Ariane:

Oh, you like that game, huh? So disgusting!

Kai:

No, no, I mean…

Ariane:

-Laughs- Liar!

Kai:

No, it’s just that I work in a bank from 930-830, and then I teach Jiu Jitsu after until like 11. And the third quality would be assertiveness. I need someone to tell me to behave!

Ariane:

So basically you want a mother. -Laughs- Ok, my turn. See? I’m being assertive. For me, my top 3 traits would be someone who’s positive - people are so unhappy in big cities, and us Singaporeans love to complain. Courteous: I think that’s a basic trait that anyone should have. And I’d prefer for him to be very kind.

Halfway Happy:

“What’s the sexiest/most romantic thing anyone’s done for you?”

Kai:

You know the 5 Love Languages? Mine is acts of service. So for example, if a girl buys me a gift, I won’t be as touched than if she does something sweet for me when I’m sick –taking me to the doctor, or buying me Vitamin C. Or if she bakes me a cake, because that’s a lot of effort.

Ariane:

I don’t think I should say this on camera. It’s very sweet, but it’s not sexy. He scrubbed me all over-

Kai:

-Bursts out laughing- I’m very sure if you went up to any random guy on the street and said ‘hey, could you scrub me all over please?’ No guy would say no, right?

Ariane:

No, it’s not like that! I found it sweet because he offered to scrub my back for me. You know like in Japan or Korea. It’s not a sexual gesture. It’s something that’s just sweet, to scrub someone’s back for them.

Beer Naked:

“Rate your drinking partner on a scale of 1-10. What’s their best trait?”

Ariane:

I’d rate you an 8. Apart from your exceptionally good looks, I think you’re very charismatic and personable. You’re easy to talk to and I think I’d warm up to you very easily.

Kai:

So if we had to rate each other on a looks and personality basis-

Ariane:

You better give me more than an 8... if not I’m breaking bottles!

Kai:

I’d give you at least an 8.5. I think you’re very attractive, and you look very young. I think you’re super chill!
